What disabled facilities are there?

Disabled Access and Seating

There are now two (2) optoins for unreserved disabled seating on track.

Situated amongst the action on the entry to the A1GP Pits at the northern end of the precinct, is a specially constructed covered platform (S70) that has a ramp for easy access. Television monitors will be located within the stand. Seating is not reserved. Disabled toilets are situated adjacent to the stand. Due to the uneven terrain, it is preferable, although not necessary for disabled persons to be accompanied by a Carer.

The best entry point is Gate 56, which is located on the outside of the track accessible from the Commodore Drive Paradise Waters side of the track. There is a ramp from Gate 56 under the road that brings patrons out very close to Stand (S70).

On the entry to the Beach Chicane is an additional specially constructed covered platform (S22) that will also have a ramp for easy access and disabled toilet located close by the platform. Best access for this stand is along the Beach front entering Main gate South on the Esplanade and from the north gate 41, on The Esplanade at Main Beach.
Any disabled person who purchases a single day GA or a four day GA ticket may gain access to the Disabled Stands #70 and #22.

There will also be reserved seating for disabled persons in Bronze Stand #18 located at the Beach Esses on the eastern side of the track. This stand will have an area for approx 12 disabled persons and seats located directly behind for Carers. This ticket is a 4 day Reserved ticket and no concession price is offered. Best access for this stand will be Main Gate South in Surfers Paradise.

Disabled parking, drop off zone and wheelchair access is available in 3 locations in the south on The Esplanade in Surfers Paradise, on the western side at Commodore Drive, Paradise Waters and in the north on The Esplanade at Main Beach for vehicles displaying a Disabled Sticker - you do not require a transit pass to enter if the car is displaying a disabled sticker.

What sort of accommodation is available in and around the SuperGP track?

The SuperGP track is literally surrounded by both High and Low rise apartment buildings and hotels, some offering track views (generally referred to as "on track"). In addition there is a complete range of holiday and resort style accommodation within walking distance off track. However for those on a budget who are happy to spend 15 to 30 minutes travelling on the Gold Coast's excellent bus system (public transport is free to SuperGP Ticketek ticket holders), there is any number of accommodation solutions along the length of the Gold Coast holiday strip.

What is meant by "on track accommodation"?

On track accommodation is accommodation within the precinct of the SuperGPTrack and therefore in the heart of the action and with many of the apartments offering track views from either balconies or windows. However not all do and quite often, as in case of some of the taller high rise buildings, the view of the track is a bit like watching model cars racing. Generally, those properties that have only limited track views offer other trackside viewing options. On track accommodation commands a premium and is therefore more expensive, with prices depending on the position and views and is generally booked out well in advance. Everyone going into on track accommodation (including visitors) must be in possession of a pass including "On Track Accommodation Access". On track accommodation can prove inconvenient if you need to come and go as access can be difficult during hours that the circuit is active.

What is meant by "off track accommodation"?

Off track accommodation is any accommodation not within the track precinct and varies from five star hotels to budget self contained apartments; however it is usually more reasonably priced. A more cost effective solution for car racing fans who want to be amongst the action, but cannot afford or obtain on track accommodation, is to arrange off track accommodation and purchase a reserved grandstand seat (either gold, silver or bronze). This has the added advantage of having a guaranteed seat right amongst the action and being able to come and go when you please.

Where is the SuperGP Race track?

The race track extends from View Street at the northern end of surfers Paradise CBD then north along the beach front to Breaker Street on the southern boundary of Main beach, then south along the gold Coast Highway. The precinct effectively occupies the entire block from Surfers Paradise to Main Beach from the beach front to the Gold Coast Highway.

Do I need to book early?

Yes. On track accommodation and much of the nearby off track accommodation is rebooked by the same guests for the next year.  What little is available is snapped up quickly early in the year. From then on the only availability is cancellations or new properties. It is wise to make a decision and book early and if you do not get exactly what you want when you try to book, it is worth placing your name on a "wait list" as although cancellations come through constantly, they are offered on a "first come first serve" basis and they are generally rebooked within hours rather than days.

Is there a minimum length of stay?

Generally yes. On track it is usually a 5 night minimum with some insisting on 7. However the pricing structure on most apartments is such that if you come for seven days and make a holiday of it, it will represent better value. Off track is variable, but few accommodation houses will do less than the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Can I get to and from the accommodation by car?

Traffic around the SuperGP track precinct is severely restricted and special procedures apply. Essentially it is grid lock around the track with flow improving the further you away from the track.

On track accommodation can only be accessed before 7am in the morning and after 7pm in the evening and then only via special access points and if you are in possession of a precinct car pass (available from the accommodation managers). This is a tortuous process at best so it is wisest to plan to leave the car at home and get around on foot.

It is similar for off track accommodation, easing the further away from the track you are, but essentially it is best to plan to avoid driving in the area from Southport to Broadbeach.

If you are travelling to the event by car and think you will need to use your car during the event, we recommend that you plan to arrive at your accommodation on the Wednesday prior to the track closing so that you can take your food, clothes, beverages etc. up to your apartment then instead of parking your car in the property car park, reposition it to the public Bruce Bishop car park under the Surfers Paradise Transit Centre (fee $28 per week in 2008), in the heart of Surfers on the corner of Beach Road & Surfers Boulevarde.  It is only a short walk from properties at the southern end of the track and is accessable 24 hours a day.

How many people can stay in an apartment?

The general rule is 2 per bedroom with a maximum of three in a one bedroom apartment, 5 in a two bedroom and 7 in a three bedroom.

What sort of accommodation is there for the holiday maker on the Gold Coast?

Australia's Gold Coast is unique in its mix of holiday and resort accommodation with something for everyone, from backpackers and campers to five star luxury hotels providing everything the most fastidious holiday maker could ever want. Regardless of the level of luxury, they all represent exceptionally good value when compared to other holiday destinations, either in Australia or the rest of the world.

Principally there are five categories of accommodation styles. They are:

  • Self Contained Apartments
  • Hotel / Motels
  • Backpacker hostels
  • Caravan / camping parks
  • Cottages and B&Bs

What is meant by the term Self Contained?

Self Contained Apartments are the most common form of accommodation for the holiday maker and have everything you expect to find in a normal home. They all have fully equipped kitchens, a laundry with washing, drying and ironing facilities and all the normal electrical and entertainment appliances you would expect to find in a modern home. All linen and towels are supplied; however they are generally serviced only on a weekly basis. If you would like more frequent servicing it can usually be arranged, but will involve an additional cost.

How many bedrooms do they have?

They come in a range of one, two and three bedroom configurations (please note that three bedroom apartments are generally in short supply during peak seasons so if you need one it is wise to book early) with the master bedroom having a queen size bed and ensuite bathroom. If there is a second or third bedroom they generally have single beds and there will be another bathroom.

How many people can stay in each?

A one bedroom apartment normally sleeps two (and an infant if you provide your own porta cot), but may be able to have a third person, generally subject to an extra person charge.

A two bedroom will normally sleep four but may take five and a three bedroom will allow six, but again may allow seven. In each case an extra person charge is applicable.

What facilities do they have?

They are normally complexes of apartments grouped together to form a resort and have on-site managers who operate a reception office during normal business hours and are available for out of hours check in / out. Most have resort facilities (all have swimming pools) with tennis courts, out-door entertaining and barbeque facilities, some have gyms and kids clubs or child minding facilities. Nearly all have underground security car parking. However very few have restaurants or room service, but there are many take away food restaurants that will deliver just about every sort of food imaginable (even breakfast) and details are available in the apartments.

What is the difference between 'High Rise' and 'Low Rise' Apartment Blocks?

Low rise apartment blocks are limited to three levels and normally do not have lifts and the complexes tend to be spread out over a large area with most of the apartments opening onto or overlooking the outdoor entertainment areas. This is often an advantage for families with young children who are likely to be spending most of the day in the swimming pools or games areas as they have access to these areas without having to use lifts and the need to pass through reception areas.

High rise blocks are usually ten levels or higher with lift access and their principal advantage is that they have balconies and spectacular views.

Can I specify what level or what views I want if I choose to stay in a high rise resort?

Generally no, however most places will attempt meet your requirements if you have a specific request, but not guarantee a particular level or view. There are a few resorts that will, for the payment of an extra fee, provide that service.

Is all accommodation air-conditioned?

No. The Gold Coast, although being subtropical, is a mild maritime climate all the year round and many of the apartments are designed to be opened up to take advantage of the cooling sea breezes and to allow out door living, so do not have air-conditioning. As a general rule air-conditioning is not needed between the months of April to October. However if you are planning a holiday during the warmer months and think you would like air-conditioning, it is wise to specify this when you enquire about or make a reservation.

What sort of transport options are there from the airport to our accommodation?

There are two airports servicing the Gold Coast, Brisbane which is 100Km to the north (and the main international airport for the region) and the Gold Coast Airport (previously named Coolangatta) which is situated at the southern end of the Gold Coast.

From Brisbane, the transport ranges from rail, through scheduled bus services (for those on a tight budget and are prepared to accept a slower journey in the interest of saving money) and door to door mini buses (which are slightly more expensive, but will deliver you to the door of your accommodation and pick you up for the return journey, however can take two hours or more, depending on the frequency of departure), to taxis and chauffeured limousines which are the quickest (around one hour from pick up to accommodation).

Surprisingly, for a family of four travelling, a chauffeured limousine is only around $20 per person, more expensive for the round trip than the other forms of transport, which for many holiday makers is not a great expense for the sake of a quick, comfortable journey (around one hour) to their accommodation.

For those holiday makers who might be planning to get around during their stay, the option that provides the best combination of convenience with economy is a hire car. For a family of four or more the cost of transfers can be the equivalent of three or four days car hire and as it is all freeway from the airport entrance to the heart of the Gold Coast, navigating to your accommodation should pose no problems even for first time visitors.

From the Gold Coast Airport (Coolangatta) the transport options are the same, except that there is no train service. For those travellers holidaying at the southern end of the Gold Coast it is only minutes from the airport to the resort areas and bus or taxi is probably the easiest solution. However for those staying from Burleigh Heads north, chauffeur driven limousine or hire cars are worth considering, depending on your circumstances. As a general guide it is approximately thirty minutes by car from the airport to Surfers Paradise and about an hour to the absolute northern end at Sanctuary Cove.

Most forms of transport can be arranged on arrival, but for a seamless transfer and peace of mind (particularly if you flight is either an early or late arrival) it is wise to book your transfer at the same time as your accommodation and / or flights.

If we want to be near restaurants and night life do we have to be in Surfers Paradise?

No. Where ever you stay on the Gold Coast you will not be far from entertainment centres and there are so many quality restaurants that you are never more than a short walk from a selection of dining options. The Broadwater, Main Beach, Broadbeach, Miami, Burleigh Heads, Currumbin, Tugun and Coolangatta precincts all have a wonderful array of wining, dining, partying and entertainment options to suit all tastes.
